Every once in awhile I have a bride where I just go ...wow! It doesn't mean it is the biggest wedding, the flashiest dress. It just means wow. Stunning. Simply stunning. Natalie was one of those brides. Lucky enough to have a second chance with her grown children at her side, she was by far one of the most elegant brides I have ever shot. A simple ceremony in their home, was truly one of the nicest I have seen. And of course it helps that she is now bearing the last name of my favorite soda.... What do you think?

I realize that I haven't written a post in over two months, and I knew I wouldn't . I was trying to take some time off. Well, not off of business, just off of shooting to take care of some other business items that I really wanted to do. Am I ready to get back to work? ABSOLUTELY! Am I totally done all the projects I thought I'd get done? Not all of them, but definitely closer. I have realized through this though, that my big kids need me for things just as often as my small kids did. With one on a mission for our church and one in university and one preparing to go... I don't think I want to see any paperwork for the next six months!

One of the smartest things I did for my business and my sanity was to hire out some of the accounting. It's not that I can't enter all that stuff... I'll be honest. I LOATHE it. I have even told a few people I'd rather have my eyeballs poked out. In the course of turning that part of my business over to some capable hands, I've had the opportunity to really get to know some wonderful people. Quite a few of them are in this family... a family of players.. instruments that is. Not only have they opened up their home and heart to a Japanese exchange student, they have provided their kids with ample learning opportunities in a lot of areas. These honestly are some of the nicest, well rounded teenagers I have ever met! And all good looking on top of it!

If you ever have thought about what locations are great for bridals....the answer is ....All of them! I had photographed Ashley as a teen and she made an absolute stunning bride. (Ben, I hope you know how lucky you are) She is genuine and kind as well, so I was thrilled to be able to do a bridal/groomal session for her and Ben. Given that there no other cares of the day, I would highly recommend this to any bride wanting a more intimate, personal session in which to create some great photos. When we discussed a few possible locations and ideas...she really loves vintage.... we decided to just make it a "play date for big kids" and try out a lot of them. Oh,what fun we had. I hope you will agree that it shows in her images. I separated them into different "scenes"... feel free to comment on your favorite!

I was invited to attend the first ever Grad A Palooza at W.R. Myers High School and it was a great opportunity to connect with this year's graduating class and their parents. Many seemed excited about my samples and I can't wait to welcome them to a planned open house after the studio receives a little facelift. Melanie and Corey were married in a quaint old museum, and the vintage details she incorporated into here wedding just made the whole day so fun! From specialty straws in their coke to her fabulous bouquet made of vintage brooches, she had definitely put a lot of thought into her day. I would not , however suggest a fall wedding near too many wasps nests. We did encounter a few too many unwanted guests during our session, but thankful Mel's dad rescued us with Raid. (I always carry sunscreen, bug spray, safety pins and cold water, but who would have thought I'd need something for a swarm of wasps?) Here is a little sampling...

If ever a "dream" bride and groom come into my life.. this is them! Both willing to do a longer session rather than an hour or two on the same day as their ceremony. That being said, I don't discount anyone's wedding day and the excitement of the day... but it's not always that you can go to a few more locations, or linger until that perfect sunlight touches on the bride's hair... during those hours when most are having their reception. Late in August I had the privilege of photographing not only a wonderful wedding, but sitting at the table during the reception of a very courageous man. He was at the wedding, though he could not of been. He was full of life, though he's had days in the past year when he wasn't. He was happy.He had a monstrous appetite for the ice cream bar (in fact, I'm sure somewhere underneath all his candy, there was in fact ice cream). He was a great bubble blower and a budding photographer. He was not the center of the day but the center of their universe. He was shorter than the other groomsmen, but stood heads above them. He just happened to have cancer. He also happens to e six years old. So, with the excitement of the announcement at the reception that he is now cancer free, I dedicate this blog post to one brave little dude...

Canadian Photographer/Special Assignments

Although 90% of my work is grads and weddings, sometimes a challenge is presented to me that I just can't say no to. The following was just such a case. I was approached by an L.D.S. seminary teacher to create images depicting the stories of the Old Testament...using her students. She wanted them to remember that some of the challenges they face today are not different than those found in the Bible and they can still be handled with a lot of faith and prayer!

So, here's the little challenge...
I'll post a photo and keep it there until the right bible story is guessed in the comments section..then I'll post another.

NO CHEATING: students in that class or who were there for the shoot are asked NOT to answer, but may comment all you want.

P.S. If you are really stuck, the scripture to look up each story is on the picture. I couldn't make this TOO hard, since I don't even have a prize..I just thought it would be kind of fun.

So being that tomorrow is Sunday...here is Story #2 (added Oct.1)

I hate to admit it , but I was a slacker this summer. Really. Not in terms of shooting, but definitely in terms of blogging. The kids are back in school, my oldest is home from his mission for the L.D.S. church, and my computer and I have been getting reaquanited. Isaid I hated to admit I was a slacker, I don't for one minute regret the little bits of summer fun I did manage to squeeze in with my girls.

That being said, I will be posting a few weddings and the odd grad session that have been collecting cobwebs in my computer.

I posted a few earlier of Shauna, probably one of my favorite grad sessions so far. In keeping with my little "Canadian Wilderness Theme" I have going (not really, just happen to score me some wildlife in the back ground every now and then) I included our bear in her post. Shauna isn't actually in the same shot, of course, because we couldn't see mama bear anywhere, and the last thing you want to do is get between mama and baby, but we had to include the bear just to prove that she was part of our series of "natural props". And just one more, and the inspiration, a painting I had done in college (I know, a bazillion years ago)

Where has the summer gone? While some of you were holidaying, boating, working in the yard or just relaxing...others were falling in love. I don't think I have been as excited for Liz and Ben to get married as I have been for anyone else. Perhaps, because, even though they are from totally different towns, I have been lucky enough to know both of them for a very long time. We actuallly used to live in the same town as Ben and he and my son were best friends in kindergarten.We now live in Barnwell and I have known Liz a long time...she's one of those caring, giving, friendly individual that is always friendly..the kind all moms give a thumbs up to when talking about girls we'd love our own son's to marry! When I found out she was dating Ben, I loved it, and even more so when I heard they were engaged! They are EACH getting a fantastic person, marrying into very good families, and are perfect for each other! I can't wait to post more from their engagement session... they were so fun!

The grad photography business has kept me busy to say the least in the last few months, and I am finally getting to the point where I can show off whole sessions of some really fabulous people. Bailey was valedictorian in her class and has a relationship with her horse like I've never seen. She was upbeat, game to try anything and bring her horse anywhere. After attending her graduation, shooting her, and getting to know her better, I know she'll achieve great things as she pursues her career in veterenarian medicine.

A year and a half ago I had the pleasure of attending a workshop by Nicole Van, and the biggest thing I took from that workshop was to find a little more drama in everything I do. I think this past year, I have tried to push that a little more. We were actually coming home from our actual shoot, when storm clouds rolled in, and we just had to be spontaneous (again). This awesome shoot won't be finished and up on the blog for a bit because I have a stack of other clients in line before Shauna, but I just couldn't resist posting one more. San Diego/Wedding and more

I had the chance (spur of the moment, really) to head to San Diego where my niece, who is going to University in Hawaii, was getting married. I know what you are all thinking...."Why didn't they get married in Hawaii?" I think they thought it would be easier for most family and guests if they came back to the Mainland.
Since I was not the "official" photographer, my husband suggested I take less gear...and I listened. ...and I'm sorry. There were SO MANY wonderful places that I would have loved a macro or a wider angle, but alas... I traveled with only 2 lenses. Oh, but next time...
That being said, I should tell you that I love Mexican food...LOVE. We ate as much as we could , and then, to my wonderful surprise, the wedding reception was catered by a sweet little Mexican lady and her family. Yummy! So, for this post, the food, and the SanDiego Temple where my niece was married. If you have never been there, it really is as bright white as it looks in pictures!

Sometimes, often times, the photos we love best aren't the ones we planned on. I had sweet new baby come to visit me and , although she was the only one "officially " with an appointment, I caught this one of big brother just waiting...

And, given that his angel sister just got all the attention up on my "baby box"......

He motioned for his mother or I to put him up too. So we plopped him up on my baby cart (that's what I call it... I got SO tired of shooting babies on the floor) where he promptly pulled his very own "cheese " face.

Photoshop Actions for Photographers/How We Do it

It is no secret that photography, in every sense, is art. How a photographer envisions his /her final product is something that starts in their mind and ends up in the final print. Some photographers choose to leave images as they come from the camera, which can often be amazing. Some choose to spend hours in Photoshop doing tiny step by tiny step. This literally can take a few hours on one image, depending on exactly what is being done. Thankfully for a lot of photographers, these steps can be saved in what is called an "action" . Think of it like an old tape recorder (if you are not old enough to even know what a tape recorder is, look it up). Before you do each of those 40 or more little steps in Photoshop, you press"record". Then you continue to do what you want to achieve the results you are looking for, increase contrast, desaturate, sharpen, etc. When you are finished and happy with the results, you hit "stop". Now you have recorded an "action". Whenever you want to repeat, or replay these same steps, you just click on the action you have created, and "play".

Even this sounds daunting to some, and, luckily for you, there are a lot of fabulous people out there who have done all that legwork and recording for you. One of my first, and still my favorite purchased actions comes from Jodi Friedman, owner of MCP ACTIONS. Her Photoshop actions for photographers not only save me time but give me amazing color, sharpness and the tweak I need.

t's almost nice for me that it has been pouring outside. I keep plugging through all the grads I took this year and keep being blown away at them. These young kids are so vibrant, so full of life, and so dang beautiful I can't believe it. I hope they know that . They can do anything they want. Enough said, and I can't wait to post more, but here is one great couple. She is graduating this year, and he just finished playing hockey for the Lethbridge Hurricanes . Both willing to go anywhere I suggested, we ended up with some great shots in some not so normal locations. Enjoy!

It was my privilege this year to photograph the Foremost High School's grads... cap & gown, ceremony, and several formals... I had to wait until now to start posting because I didn't want to ruin the big "dress surprise" secret for some of these girls...

Some of the kids had separate sessions with me in the weeks leading up to grad but , because Foremost also has two gyms,they have me set up for the morning and afternoon in the spare gym and some grads can come right there for their formals with or without their date or family.How cool is that? And since it was raining all week, indoors wasn't a bad choice. All in all, it was fun to do, and I met a bunch of GREAT people out in Foremost! There are lots more to come, but here's a sneak peek:

With the weather being so iffy around here for the last oh, 12 months, we still weren't sure what would happen with all my outdoor grad session, but each and everyone of them ended up having perfect weather, and isn't that what these kids deserve? They've worked hard for 12 years, let's reward them with some pictures of them all dressed up in their fancy schmancy finery! Michelle was a doll to work with and had such a unique dress.... and I LOVED the feathers in her hair!

Canadian Wedding Photographer/Karlee and Phil... If Gorgeous had a name..

If gorgeous had a name it would definitely be Karlee. Same goes for stunning. So, that being said, leads me to believe that Phil is now the luckiest guy on the planet to know such a girl. One that is not only beautiful inside, but outside as well. The photos of their day (my first sunny Canadian wedding of the past 10 months by the way) show that a prairie girl who is a mud-loving, quad-riding, puddle-jumping, rugby-playing person that she is and let the world know that she is everybit a princess as she is playful. She and her sister remind me so much of my own girls..one is shorter and mellower, one is taller and loves bling! So Phil, aside from the mud, horses, sports, and the like, don't forget she needs her nails done every three weeks, plus a pedi , massage and shopping trips regularly! Seriously, Karlee is caring, giving and so often thinks of others..and is careful about her choices in life, which, undoubtedly is why she chose Phil.

I just had to Post a few more of these. My second set of twin girl this month, and what sweeties they were. Starting off life at just over 3 or 4 pounds, they got to hang out in the hospital just a tad longer than most newborns that get to come see me. Of course they bring a huge smile to big brother as well as mom and dad. Enjoy!

I can't believe the amount of babies I've been seeing around this month..and for me, 5 out of 5 have been girls! Kyle and Lindsey welcomed this precious package and she was absolutely perfect through most of the shoot.Having my job is much like being a grandparent.. I can snuggle them, smell them, talk to them, sing to them... and then send them home with mom and dad! Funny though, I have a son leaving on an lds mission this week, and everytime something around the house happens, I break out in the country song "You're Gonna Miss This"... well, occasionally I miss this too! V

Not every day do I get to shoot twins. And not every month do I get two sets! But definitely not every day do any of the babies I photograph happen to be my next-door-neighbors! Mark and Cari could not have welcomed these little girls any more than they are! Beautiful, complete little perfect bundles.. and definitely different from each other. Little baby K would have slept through everything, while her sister was just wide awake for most of her time with me.. Their parents keep threatening (promising)to put one of the baby monitors over at our place...This little family of four sure seems to have settled in to their new life together!

So.. the winter saga continues.Shoot days and snow days are now one and the same. Phil and Karlee were troopers... and if any of you know Karlee's Dad, he NEVER wears a coat in winter! I can't believe how fun this was even though we were freezing..You can't tell, really, but, the snow got lighter and fluffier and one of my favorite shots is one of the last...When both Karlee and Phil were starting to look like snowmen! In true form to my last 2 weddings, another scorching -18 degree wedding day came again this weekend. Blessed with sunshine this time, Nicole and Andrew were both stunning and charming with their red and black accents. Cold but courageous, we did manage to get in a few shots I absolutely adore already. Thank goodness they are going someplace warm on their honeymoon! My husband got to tag along on this shoot and, bless his heart, we were going to do a little shoot at the top of a small hill off the road. I look back down the hill and here comes my husband packing up the red velvet couch over his head through a foot of snow! I knew I'd love it up there, but didn't quites want to ask anyone considering the weather, the deep snow and the hill to hike! What a guy!

Well, if it weren't for bad luck, Warren and Letisha might not have had any luck at all!.. I realize planning a wedding in the winter is taking a chance all on it's own, but we thought we might outsmart old man winter. Planning an entire afternoon to do their shots, the weather dropped to -18 degrees celcius (still mighty cold for those of you busy doing the math).. and so we were leaning towards studio shots..Then, day of all days, they were in a car accident on the way to my place!! Thank goodness no one was hurt (the car certainly was), but we decided it was best to just choose another day a few weeks after the wedding and go out then.... Well, as luck would have it, -18 again! Ever meet one of those kids that you just can't resist? Meet Chloe. Spunky, girly, sparkly and some days full of attitude! We've known Chloe since the day she was born. My husband rocked her to sleep almost every week at church (patience of Job). She sometimes calls him "Uncle Mike". We are lucky enough to have Chloe and her 2 brothers and sister hang out at our house sometimes, and we don't even have little kids anymore. We love it. It reminds us how fun they are. So.. when thinking of a little "spokesgirl" for my Valentine ad, of course she popped into my head. She was all up for a shoot, and I think I had the most fun. Come to think off it, I've had fun with all y 4 year old clients... maybe next promotion I'll run a little "help wanted "ad. This is the one post I must really apologize for . Posting summer pictures in January. tsk, tsk on me! This is, however one of my favorite people in the world, my niece Kami and her boyfriend Mitchell. We were just playing around on Grandma's farm in the summer. Not only is she a beautiful girl with fabulous eyes, she is very kind and giving too. She selflessly spends time helping her dad with shopping, cooking, laundry, and running her younger sisters around since their mother passed away three years ago. Even though she has now moved out, she still checks in on them lots and helps a ton. You are my hero Kami!!!!!

While I was sitting here feeling sorry for myself because of the minus twenty-something weather, I was just wishing it was spring. Then my mind quickly went to what I was doing last spring, March to be exact. I was in Utah attending Nichole Van's LIFE AS ART workshop. What an amazing experience that was, as nervous as I was to. I not only got to meet the award winning photographer, but to see that she was human, and on path to learning more just like the rest of us. I met a great group of wonderful photographers and together, we all gleaned a little of what Nichole makes looks so easy... everything from art history, composition and design, to finding our own creativity and motivation was discussed as well as some technical points, lighting, photoshop editing and workflow. I felt like a sponge, not able to take in the vast amount of information she laid before us. Lucky for me, and all others there, Nichole used to teach technical writing at BYU. Therefore her book "Life as Art"/Workbook for Professionals was so incredibly well written and professionally done,I continue to pour over it's contents and learn. That book alone was worth the trip, not to mention the practice cd,the freebies from vendors and coupons for her Flourish Emporium!Some of the other photographers I met there have also been my "weekly support team" even though we live miles apart we have encouraged and supported one another. So... as Spring rolls around this year..I think I'll head south for awhile.

Alberta Photographer/Merry Christmas to Ashley & Vasco: Sneak Peek

At the very end of November I had the privilege to do a maternity shoot for a new client and sister in law of a client of mine. It was so nice to meet Ashley and Vasco as they awaited their little bundle who was to arrive shortly after Christmas. Surprise! Within the week I got a call telling me beautiful little Jezrelle had made an early appearance! Weighing in at only 6 pounds I think she is definitely the baby that I have shot closest to her mother's maternity photos!I told her parents they made my Christmas absolutely perfect by allowing me to spend some moments with such a fresh little baby straight from heaven...kind of reminded me of the whole reason for Christmas. So... here are a few to introduce the whole family!

This one finally gave me a good use for a tape measure that came with a cancer study kit..the actual words say "Measure 1" above your navel even if this is not your usual waistline"..

Award Winning Photographer/Canon Creative Asia Comptetition

I got the best Christmas present ever this week! Two of my wedding portraits, entered in a category of "bride or groom alone" took a Bronze award at the Canon Creative Asia Competiion! This is an international competition, based (obviously by the name) in Asia and sponsored by Canon,WPPI and Louis Pang(WPPI's winner of International Print of the year, and fantastic destination wedding photographer)of Malaysia. The two portraits entered were the ones so many of you commented on when I originally posted...you guys must have great taste! I am so honored to have recieved the scores I did and to have my prints competing against others for a higher award right now.
Here are the winning images and some of the judges feedback:

I'll admit it. I'm still very much a little kid when it comes to Christmas. I love surprises, and one of my children (a.k.a."the snooper") can't stand them .This year I outsmarted them! All our gifts are under the tree with NO TAGS! Snoop away my dear..Santa still knows! Oh, and speaking of Santa..we had the most adorable visitors stop by the studio when he was here last week! They double checked that their names were indeed on the list under the "good" column. One even lost a game of snakes and ladders to Santa and admitted to his mom that he was afraid to cheat in case Santa put him on the "naughty" list! Good choice!

Christmas..pure and simples

A friend emailed me today, and I must be honest when I say that I don't read every joke, poem or funny story passed my way, but I love Christmas, and the subject of her email piqued my curiosity. What a gift she sent me. A very touching, timely Christmas song. I am posting the new video, but an older version is also on youtube. I'm feeling a little guilty as I have advertised photos with Santa this Saturday at the studio.Some of my most treasured photos are currently hanging in the studio and depict a much simpler scene of a babe in a manger.We too have tried to teach our children the true meaning of Christmas, and I guess our opinion of Santa is that originally there was a kindly saint who did give gifts secretly... not sure where the flying reindeer came from. My husbands grandfather played Santa and that "tradition" has been passed down a few generations.. That being said, I am very religious and have more nativities in my home over the holidays than Santa's, I cry singing some of the Christmas carols (hymns) because I know their real significance, and have joy in watching my two sons go out and teach others about Jesus Christ. Regardless of your views.. keep this in mind: I once was watching the documentary "Super Size Me" and an adult was showing several photos to preschool children... pictures of presidents, landmarks, Jesus, and McDonalds golden arches. Everychild there knew what the big yellow M stood for, but none knew who Jesus was. Enjoy, and read the story about the song after the video
Here’s the story behind the song:

About the Song

While at the mall a couple of years ago, my then four year old nephew,
Spencer, saw kids lined up to see Santa Claus. Having been taught as a
toddler that Christmas is the holiday that Christians celebrate the
birth of Jesus, he asked his mom, "Where's the line to see Jesus"?

My sister mentioned this to my dad, who immediately became inspired and
jotted words down to a song in just a few minutes. After putting music
to the words, and doing a quick recording at home, he received a great
response from friends. He sent the song off to Nashville without much
response, except for a Christian song writer who suggested adding a
bridge at the end of the first chorus.

My dad then asked if I wanted to record the song to see what we could
do with it. I listened to the song, made a few changes to the words to
make it flow better, and we headed to Shock City Studios. It was at the
studio where Chris, owner and producer, rewrote the 2nd verse and part
of the chorus... with goosebumps and emotions high, we were all hopeful
and felt like we had something special. The demo was recorded in just
under 2 hours and sent off again to Nashville... still no response.

Then 2 weeks before Christmas last year, my cousins Greg and Robbie
decided to do a video to see what we could accomplish on YouTube. The
first day we had 3000 hits and it soared from there. We received
e-mails, phone calls, Facebook messages from people all over asking for
the music, CD's, iTunes, anything... we had nothin'. After a couple of
meetings with Chris following the amazing response, we got serious.

We headed back into the studio this past spring... this time with
guitars, drums, bass, pianos, choirs... the real deal.... and here we
are today. Getting iTunes set up, a website put together, and loving
that thousands upon thousands of Christians have come together...
remembering the true meaning of Christmas. Out of the mouths of babes
come profound truths that many adults can not understand. Hopefully
Spencer's observation will cause people all over to reflect on the love
of Jesus, and that one day we will all stand in line to see Him. We are
most thankful to our Heavenly Father to have this chance to share our
music with you. Merry Christmas everyone.

I know I should be posting frosty snow photos right now... but I still have a lot to show from the fall, and remember I said I promised to blog more?? I love this little family... I did a nativity shoot last Christmas using their baby.. I still love it and will post it closer to Christmas. These little sweeties will grow up as good buddies as they are so close in age. Brigham and Natalie are twins, but big brother is only a year older, so mom had her hands full when they came along... I teach the twins at church and it was an honor for me to also get to photograph them. Anyone who knows me or has read my blogs knows that after brides and high school grads..four year old girls are my favorite!

Alberta Wedding Photographer/A Less-Stress Christmas

Well, here we are into December already, and I'll admit to one thing: This year I'm a bit of a basketcase (nor reference to the following photo). Usually, by December 1, I have over half my shopping done, my decorations up, and my baking started..at least teh homemade chocolates. This year I have none of that. I have a few edits to finish, lights to get working, and basketball games to be watching. I am a mess! Oh, I might appear calm, cool, and collected if you see me, but ... beware of the Christmas Stress Monster lurking inside. As busy crazy as I am, I am so thankful to a good client, Amber, for bringing me an hour of stress relief yesterday in the form of a her newest bundle of joy. To avoid the same holiday stress, take stock of what is REALLY important to include in your Christmas celebrations and let the rest go.
Think about the following list (after photos).. are they "have to's" or "maybe next year?'s
1. Decorate the house to rival Martha Stewart (if this is a Have to....come see my store! LOL)
2. Make quadruple fold hand made cards with hand pressed, hand picked wildflowers and stamped embossed original quotes included with a minimum of 7 perfect photos of each of your darling children. Insert into hand made envelopes, again stamped and embossed by hand, and mailed to 658 facebook friends whom you've never met.
3. Re-enact or visit a live nativity
4. Make eggnog
5. Visit Family
6. Go for a horse-drawn sleigh ride through snow with each family member donning their newest Victorian Christmas attire. Oh, and the horses must have bells on their bob-tails.
7. Read the Christmas story with your family from the Bible
8. Make gingerbread men
9. Make sugar cookies
10.Make homemade chocolates
11. Go Christmas Carolling
12. Visit relatives
13. Go to 3 school concerts, 2 church dinners, 3 office parties, two neighborhood parties, plus throw your own party.
14. Deliver food to a food bank, blankets or pillows to a homeless shelter, or some other act of kindness
15. Watch every Christmas movie in your library

This is only a short list of what could and does go on at homes around the country this time of year. Be selective in what is REALLY important to your Christmas celebrations, enlist a little help, then sit back and enjoy! Now... maybe after 2 weeks of sitting in my living room, I'll actual get me tree up!

Alberta Wedding Photographer/I am Thankful

Today is Thanksgiving in the United States. I am Canadian, through and through, but am reflecting again, like I did when we had our own Thanksgiving in October, on what I am thankful for. I don't live in a big fancy house. I drive an older suburban. I have a life, that compared to those around me maybe quite simple. As a photographer, I am often told "oh, you would notice that (the light, the bird, the whatever) because you are a photographer". I , today , I am thankful that I am a photographer, and that, from time to time (though usually not in November) slow down to "notice" things.
For the remainder of this week, I'll take a break from posting clients and post a few things I've been lucky enough to notice, in the place I'm lucky enough to live. I think we all need to notice the little things we are blessed with a little more often:

Okay, this is a shoot from the summer, but remember I said I was holding back a few because I knew I was making a new blog? Well, Kennedy and Nicole are stopping by to visit today,so I thought I'd re-visit their wedding. They were so fun! Married in the Cardston Alberta Temple, they allowed me a lot of time for photos, as well as going out on a separate bridal shoot. Those of you who followed my old blog may remember this.... Downtown.. waiting out dry moments in a rainstorm, and being visited by several downtown "residents". Kennedy is so easy going.. he was friends with the whole street by the time the shoot was done!

Lakeside Photographer/What Happened to Summer?

As I sit here in my office in my snow boots (don't ask)with a fire roaring in the next room, I think how I really would miss the seasons if I were to move to some place tropical. It's currently -20 degrees Celsius outside, and I'm telling you, I'm missing one season already! Summer! We didn't have much of it this year, but I did get a chance to get away to the lake for a few days with my family, and another weekend with the Jensen family. Nothing like family and the lake. Nothing.

These two are still so cute..almost like newlyweds!

I just love this setting... green , green , and more green!
I can't wait to do these guys' engagements and wedding in Calgary next summer!

Wedding Photographer/Midnight Madness

Winter has been with us full force, and a tradition amoung businesses in the Taber area is Midnight Madness.. a pre-Christmas sale with most of the local businesses participating. I advertised independant of the Taber Chamber of Commerce, and with -18 temperatures, wondered how many would venture the 5 miles out of town to my (as I affectionately call it ) "Little Shop on the Prairie".
Seven o'clock came and so did the people! Neighbors, photography clients, friends and new customers from Taber surprised me with items flying off the shelves. I cannot express my appreciation for such good response! Christmas was in the air, and several back ends were lined up near my fire! Cozy is one of the best ways to describe the store on a night like that. Good snacks, good company, and a warm fire! Since I forgot to take pictures of the evening (didn't have time.. had two cashiers and two full time wrap/bag girls going).. I will post a seasonal photo of the cutest little baby that arrived last month! What a gift! (not that I'm hinting to Santa or anyone else involved in those sorts of projects)

A Huge Thank -You goes out to Rebeccah Hilchie of Matilda Jane Clothing who, as the only Matilda Jane "Trunk Keeper" in all of Canada, braved the winter driving conditions and drove all the way down to be on hand at my Midnight Madness . There was a party going on over in her little corner, for sure, and I can't wait to photograph some of the kids in town sporting their new outfits when they get here (I'm so impatient..).
As for the party in the home decor section of my studio, two of the most popular items were any of the nativities that I carry and an art print I've made entitled "The Warriors Quest". It is a print made from a photo I took while part of a photography crew on a 5 day church camp last summer. The teenagers were re-enacting a scene from The Book of Mormon(another Testament of Jesus Christ). Several of the parents came through my store, and stocking stuffers were being picked up for those teens as a reminder of the good experience they had. 5x12 mounted sells for 14.95. Larger Framed Art Prints are also available at 149.95

The next day I was in at the Taber Jingle Craft Fair with equally good response. Needless to say.. I went to bed at 7 that night, and my store will be calling my name very early Monday morning to get it back to the way I (OCD) like it!

I have seen similar Videos before, but this is one of my favorite! I've been in the photography business for 13 years this spring (yikes!) and one of two things will happen when people view this, if they own a good camera.... 1) They may be starting out and may be offended. 2) they've been in the business long enough to have a good chuckle. While. him definitely not out to offend anyone (we all start somewhere and grow from there, right?) ... I still hold my opinion that some people do not grasp the other aspects of running a photography business. I told my nephew that I think photography is 60% business. 30% marketing, and 10%. taking photos/ training.... but what do I know? Enjoy. ( I haven't screened all of these.. but I know the Larry King one is good. ).

Lethbridge photographer/ Job Perks

Sometimes I think this job has no perks! I work long evenings, Saturdays, and the occasional holiday if I'm "feeling especially generous. I sometimes forget that my biggest Perks" are the clients that soon become friends. She Perks family. along with their two British Terriers, have been coming back to me for about years now, It's been fun to watch the girls, grow up... and get ready to graduate... Yikes! 'a long time ago. I used to babysit the 3 cutest little boys.... They lived. a few blocks from me and were never any (?) trouble .I remember their house had navy blue carpet.It was full of antiques... a passion of their dad, to some extent, but definitely of their their grandma Johnson. to new client called me up to do a family session. I had never met here but guess who she is married to? One of those cute little boys.... all grown up; of course! they now have the artists little boy and give of their own. In honour of the family antique hobby of years before... I did a nostalgic twist. on most of their images. and I love it!

Well, most of my posts are definitely related to photography, so please forgive me when I throw a few personal ones in here and there. My second son, Ryan , had submitted his papers to serve a 2 year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. Very excited to go, he received his call this past week and will be serving in the Idaho, Boise Mission. His older brother, Clay is serving in the Utah, Ogden mission. I have really enjoyed the letters sent home from Clay and hearing about the experiences he is having. Through my photography years I have met an awful lot of wonderful people. Some of them know I am a Mormon, some do not. Some care about stuff like that. Some do not. Regardless , my nephew sent this video to us this week and I thought it did a great job of explaining just what those guys in the white shirts with name tags do... cartoon style. So.. for anyone wondering.. I just thought I'd share.

While I knew I was working on a new blog with Crystal Smith of Envision Image , I held back a few (okay, a lot) of photos from the summer and fall, not wanting to fill up my old blog with things I hope people don't go back to . Today was the day. I saw them. Fairies. Real Ones. They came to visit me.

Now that I have the Home Decor Store and Studio, I decided to invite the local ghosts and goblins that were out trick or treating to the studio for a FREE 4X6 studio shot in their costumes as well as a treat! What creativity there is in this town! I will include a few from those who stopped by the studio,
to a) show off what cute kids there are in this town
b) give you ideas for costumes for next year
c) make you tired just thinking about costumes for next year!
I think as my own kids have gotten older (old enough to make their ownGreek goddess, duck , and blue man group costumes this year) I really appreciate how adorable these kids are!

But seriously..Halloween... why? We all know the sugar isn't good for us. We all know the scary stuff spooks the little kids.We all (okay, most kids have no idea) know the beginnings of Halloween traditions... and yet year after year we bundle our kids up in costumes the trip over, can't see out of, and refuse to wear more than once in their lifetime. Why? Oh... because they are so dang cute! I couldn't believe some of the creativity spewing out of some families in town this year! There is one family in particular for which the whole dressing up thing is a family affair... you'll know who they are... they have a theme every year. Seriously. And the Dad dresses up. Double seriously. We all try to get that creative... bah! You know when your kids ask "Well, what are the Murray kids being this year?" that you might not even go there... Truly, Tracy is amazing... and the whole town looks forward to her "creations" each year. Last year... sea creatures, This year....seasonal fairies along with Mother Nature and Father time...So, I'm really not complaining. Really. I actually gave out double the candy this year (so what if our friend is a dentist...any thing to help stimulate the neighborhood economy... his wife shops in my home decor store, lol). I hope this is our new Halloween tradition...check out the kiddos...

Alberta Child Photographer/Fundraiser ~Trim 4 Brynn

Each of us in our lifetime, has some kind of mountain we must climb. Some of us have already started up , some go their whole life before it happens, and some, who climb mountains that seem impossible, do it long before we think they are ready to climb, but do it better than we ever could ourselves.

That is Brynn, my now 11 year old neighbor girl, 3 doors down. This summer she was diagnosed with , a rare muscle cancer. Any parents heart will go out of their chest an slide down to their sleeve when hearing her story. As much as her own parents or any of us would like to take this from her, we know we can't. So we do what we can. This is when living in a small town means so much. The entire community came together to support Brynn's family so they could have a parent stay home with their other 3 children while one parent is in Calgary with Brynn while she undergoes almost a whole year of chemotherapy and radiation. Brynn's aunt, the secretary at the school, got the idea for a "Trim 4 Brynn" night at the school . We live in a village of 500 people. Amazing people. Giving people. I wanted donate as well, but, because our new Home Decor store was relatively new and money was tight, I didn't know how. I had no staff to "pledge donations"... so I turned to my clients. I cannot thank my clients, both old and some new, who quickly signed up for mini sessions on the weekend before the Trimm 4 Brynn night. Thanks to them, I was able to donate on behalf of those clients in a manner I would have liked. It was a small drop in a bucket that ended up being filled to the tune of $24,000.00! The people in this community have big hearts, and again, I count my blessings for most of those people donating because they know personally what a sweet, caring girl Brynn is. Alberta Wedding Photographer/A New Blog, A New Direction

I am so excited to where I am, and heading in a new direction (read on) with my photography business! First of all, a huge, huge, HUGE THANK YOU to Crystal Smith of Envision Image Design for being my blog guru. I only met by chance (destiny, really) online early this past spring, then in person this past summer. We seem to keep the same hours, run in the same online cirlces, and have the same vision for our businesses. I cannot thank her enough for talking with me about business at 3 am, getting this blog up, running, and inpsiring me!

So.. back to the new direction.... after 12 years of photography in and around my growing families schedules and really finding what "makes me tick".. I have decided to share with the world where my photography "loves" really lie. They are... and in this order ; Weddings, Female High School Seniors & 4 year old girls tie for 2nd place, and "Art" projects (the kind done just because I want to , to push myself, to try new things, or just to hang out with other like minded people). That being said, you will notice that both my new site and blog appear that I am in Love with being a wedding photographer. It's true. I love the look of young brides, I love the looks couples give to each other, I love to mull over the advice I hear from the officiator at ever wedding, and I love to get back to my computer after a wedding and going "Bang on! That's what I was Looking For".

Blogging Blues? I will admit right here and now that I have become , this past summer, a bum of a blogger, but I will repent and make up for it now. Promise. Outloud. (imagine me saying this now..I have a low, fairly boring voice).

I, Sheila Kurtz, do solemnly promise to become a better blogger. I promise to post more photos more often. I promise to sound wise, knowledgable and like what I have to type might be important to someone, even if it's only me!. I promise to blog about my clients, my business, my goals, my thoughts, my design creations, & my ideas for other photographers, what I learn from other photographers, and not just about how many emails were in my in box today or what I had for lunch! Now, back to that"new direction" I was talking about....

I had the privilege of photographing Jolayne and Jason... in the snow.... in SEPTEMBER! Only in Canada! There is only one word to describe Jolayne..Stunning. She is young, but carries herself as a sophisticated woman so deeply in love with her man.

What a Fantastic Day!

Ashley was so fun and (get this) told us" I don't know how to do this!" You Rock Girl! Carla (my stylist, prop girl and snack runner) was on her game on this shoot! We had so much fun,we can't wait to do it again. Ashley graduated last year, but wanted to get some pics in her dress...I actually enjoyed this particular session so much... and now I have a few girls knocking on my door to do a similar "day out". Can't wait.

Torn Between Two Lovers..maybe more.

Today was a sad day. I realized when I saw a job posting in the paper for a kindergarten assistant how much I loved my "old" job. I miss the kids. I miss the people. I miss seeing my kids at school everyday. On the other hand I love my photography job. I love being able to "borrow" babies for an hour or so. I love giggling with 4 year olds. I love working at 2 am. Ok.not. But..the position was temporary...just until June. And my studio will only be open 3 days a week. Tempting. And then there is taking care of my own kids....I need 3 of me. But please..make the other 2 more patient. And skinnier.

Don't Judge a Book by It's Cover...

It's been a long winter and I thought spring was here. It's snowing again .Hard. But we started this studio project in the snow,we may as well end it the same way. Poor hubby has spent a lot of hours across the street, bless his heart, and now we are cleaned, insulated, framed, wired, drywalled and ready to mud and tape (bless you Hansen Homes!) Can't wait to lay the paint on those walls and get to hanging some prints. The yard, alas, is a whole other story, but the pile of wood and scrap metal is slowly getting smaller. I am totally excited for next weekend . I know the snow will find somewhere else to play. I know the grads coming to our Great Grad Grafitti Night have some fantastic ideas with which to create.....and because it will mean I am one week closer to opening! Funniest part is..whenever I tell someone we are renovating the shop across the street into a studio...they think I mean the first picture. Dang good lighting in there, but not very warm in the winter..

Studio K Photography-Murphy's law & roadtrip

What exactly Murphy's law again? Oh yeah- whatever can go wrong will... and I survived. But next time I'm flying.

I was so, so, so fortunate to get into a photography workshop on a smaller scale. I debated between attending WPPI this year and going to a more intimate workshop. I'm glad I was able to because Nichole Van (I'd shorten my name too if my last name was Van Valkenburgh) was absolutely amazing! It was my road trip that was less than worthy of praise. I had a tire blow out before I even left the country..and shame on me for not shooting 100 images of the fog in the hills around me while I waited for someone with more muscle power than I to get that tire off. Who ever you are....I thank you! (I did get it jacked up and ready ladies!). Then.. 7 hours later..a flat on another tire! Seriously! This could only happen near a town with no tire shop. On the road again and definitely behind schedule I stop in Logan, Utah to drop my son's bike off to him... then the dang vehicle won't start again. Starter's shot. So am I at this point. Moral of the tattered tale.... thank goodness for the goodness still found in people today. I totally had to rely on some strangers to help me out. Wish we could all remember to be like that...

On to the workshop..AMAZING! FANTASTIC! And most importantly..inspired me higher. Inspired me to get out and shoot because I love to. I also met some fantastic photographers, some of which I can genuinely call friends now: Nataly Harris, Susan Saarel, Jessica Freely,Alisha Watson Shaw , Sheri Mazariegos , Megan O'Connell Squires, Kari Hall , Melissa Burnett, and more. Goodies Galore

When it was snowing this morning (March..ugh) I thought I wouldn't get much done today. Then my computer wouldn't start. All day! (double ugh) but I ended up sorting through 12 boxes of books (I'm a sucker for children's books ) and decided to part with 3 whole boxes worth. Amazing. I also got a new bench for the studio, and got a sneak peak at some of the darn cutest frames you will ever see.Everyone else will have to wait a bit more, but trust me...worth it.Very worth it. By noon I had all but sold our trailer (thank you facebook) and well, surprised myself by the end of the day..it was a good day after all. Now to get packed and ready for my photo workshop next week...

Spontaneous Road Trip

I say we never go anywhere. I lied. While we don't do the "go out everyweekend thing" we have managed to go on a few trips with the kids, but this past weekend , I couldn't believe it... with not much "planning ahead" at all, I said "Hey, let's go to Rexburg to see then new babies" (my nephews wifes had both just had babies). To my surprise..Mike didn't say no! It was so worth it. Funny how I'll drive 8 hours when I know there are babies to be held. I miss mine. So, we gave up a weekend of working on the studio, but no worries, we will be painting in two weeks! Yippee!

Life Amid the Chaos

My new site is almost done! Yipee.. Of course it will never be as perfect as I envisioned..but the craziness that surrounds this thing called life allows me to do what I can do.. There are a few purposes in changing my site ; 1) display photos in my gallery a little larger 2)Put forth more info to my potential clients ..I still love to explain in person, but I understand that some of you surf the net when the rest of us are sleeping and 3) Showcase more of the products I offer. Float wraps, cd cases, cards & invitations and more. After all, a picture is worth a thousand words, so now I have pictures! The other push to have a"new" site is that it goes so well with my new studio. Sort of like milk and cookies...without the moustache!

The studio is steadily progressing and no one is more excited than me! Okay, maybe my friend Heather, but I don't see her over here mudding and taping...hee hee. It couldn't be a more perfect time to open either..warm weather, grads, weddings, and kids wanting to be outdoors. I so so can't wait for the big "grand opening" (tba)..and to showcase what I learn at some workshops I'm attending this month. !

Life in the Fast Lane

Wow. Here I am blogging twice in less than a month..what's up with that? I have good intentions to be like all my fave photographers out there and write something both funny and inspirational each and everyday, but alas, if I've discovered anything in this life it is that I am very, very (more than I care to admit) NORMAL. That being said, after I've found matching socks, fed half of my children (the sleeper-inners can fend for themselves), and actually gotten ready for the day, I realize that I might just have a little time to work on my new website(can't wait), take care of this week's clients, and maybe take the meat out for supper! I'm still not sure why God never made us all twins, cause I sure could use two of me now and then. How did I do it when I had four small children at home? Well, here's to good friends who help out in a pinch, family who ignores my "I'm going crazy I have too much to do" attitude, and clients who keep me going. Ah.... the high school Senior! I remember when I was young! Being a senior is both exciting and scary..kind of like a roller coaster. Ready or Not

Well, just over a week until Christmas! Are you ready? I always used to relish in the fact that I could say "yes" any time after November 30th. Not this year! I'll be lucky if the stockings make it out of the washer together and into the dryer, let alone get hung up with care! I need to shoot somehting. Badly. With a camera. I shot/edited/posted like crazy all of October and November, and am somewhat saddened that a giant evergreen (albeit fake...no live trees were killed for this post) had taken over my studio space. I love Christmas, the whole of it. Really. The lights, the tree, the baking, the neighbors, the carols,and most of all the reason. This year however is different. A little melancholy maybe. Maybe because I'm not "done" the things I usually do. Maybe because my oldest "baby" won't be here for Christmas this year (our first with out him)... or maybe, just maybe because all I really want to do is sit down by our fire, sipping on "Loco Hot Coco" and reading and ignoring the phone, the edits, the to-do lists and the the Christmas cleaning. Oh, wait. I can't relax too too much because my hubby bought me the bestest present ever.... the lot and shop across from our home and I have to be busy with the renovations/building over there. Soon. As soon as this last log burns and my hot chocolate is gone. MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE! I'll see you when I see you!

After 20 photo sessions and a computer crash, I think I finally get to take a breath! It has been a fun October so far with fall shoots, babies, and families. Throw in a little girls volleyball, and I've had quite the mix. It was great to stop by Molnar's pumpkin patch again... I don't quite have those ones posted yet, but anyone anxious, give me a call. Well, I've been crazy crazy busy...and then to throw computer problems in there...it's been a crazy week, but I think we have the bulk of the problems ironed out! Okay, Christmas isn't quite here, but in my business it really is just around the corner. October is a great time to book family photos for your Christmas card, and this year it's even better.
